BUSINESS CARES: DAYS OF CARING: HOSTING A DAY OF CARING

Hosting a Day of Caring

What makes the best project for Days of Caring:

  • Projects that are hands on (i.e. painting, landscaping, playground constructing)
  • Projects working with agency clients (i.e. children and youth, seniors, individuals with disabilities)
  • Projects that address agency needs
  • Projects that increase volunteers’ understanding of agency impact
  • Projects that engage volunteers for the duration of their schedule project time

Managing a Day of Caring Project:

  • Submit a project registration form and include directions to the project site
  • Complete the agency waiver and submit to Pittsburgh Cares
  • Complete the PPG Paint Donation Online Request Form if applicable and submit to Pittsburgh Cares (Deadline: August 31, 2008)
  • Provide a table for volunteer registration, t-shirt distribution (if necessary), name tags
  • Greet the volunteers and provide a name tag for each volunteer
  • Provide a continental breakfast for projects starting in the morning
  • Provide a brief orientation to your agency including the agency mission, programs, and impact
  • Introduce key staff members assisting with the Day of Caring project
  • Clearly identify the goals for the Day of Caring project (i.e. paint 2 rooms, landscape the entry walkway, read to 15 children, package 100 science kits)
  • Review host site logistics (i.e. location of restrooms, smoking areas, refreshment area, rules and policies of host site)
  • Have all project supplies divided by task and in the appropriate designated project area with clear instructions as to how to complete the task
  • Have staff members available to guide volunteers through tasks
  • Provide lunch for projects that run through lunchtime
  • Gather volunteers at the end of the project to recognize their impact, reflect on the project, and encourage the completion of the volunteer evaluation form (Corporations will receive an evaluation form via email post-project.)
  • Thank all volunteers for their time and support of your agency
