VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT : YOUTH ENGAGED IN SERVICE (YES)

Dale Wang

Dale attends Mount Lebanon High School and has been volunteering in various ways through school and Pittsburgh Cares for about four years.  He believes it is important for youth to volunteer because there are so many problems in the world today economically, socially, and politically.  Dale thinks it is important for people to be more active in trying to solve these issues and this sense of involvement and activism needs to start at a very young age.  He says, “In a Perfect World…every human being would have the basic necessities that many Americans take for granted such as potable water, shelter, food, and a sense of security.”

Terry Throm

Terry has been volunteering through Pittsburgh Cares for over 2 years and learned about us through existing volunteers at an event.  His favorite projects include those with The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.  Actually interacting with the community and volunteers is the best part!  Terry likes living in Pittsburgh because it’s a big sports-town!  But, mostly because of the family-oriented people…definitely not the weather!  He says, “In a Perfect World…those who have more, would give more.

Megan McQuade

Megan began volunteering at a young age and she’s always liked helping people out through activities at church.  Since the ninth grade, Megan has been very active in organizing school volunteering projects.  She thinks it is important for youth to volunteer because today's young people take a lot of things for granted and volunteering really makes you humble and brings things into perspective.  The leaders she admires most are Oprah and the Gates' because they have so much money but they do so much good with it!

Kayla Tomasino

Kayla attends Penn Hills High School and likes volunteering with Toys for Tots because it is a lot of fun and she gets to experience what she can do for other people.  She thinks it is important for youth to volunteer because you should learn to appreciate the world before you get too old that you don’t care.  If Kayla could live in one Pittsburgh building/landmark/park/store, she would live where she is because it’s home!  Her favorite quote is, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans” by John Lennon.
